WHAT IS PARENT TRAINING?

Parent Training is provided to parents that need support in addressing their child’s behavioral concerns. Although there are hundreds of parenting books out there, there is no rule book on how to parent your specific child. Each child is different, requiring unique parenting strategies to succeed. Via this form of therapy, parents receive specific skills and tools to better manage their child’s behavioral or emotional difficulties. Some of the common strategies involved in parent training include:

  • Establishing house rules and behavioral rewards

  • Beginning a token economy to reinforce good behavior

  • Ignoring specific non-desirable behaviors, while rewarding prosocial behaviors

  • Using clear instructions and setting behavioral expectations

  • Utilizing effective communication strategies to set boundaries

  • Managing tech time effectively to increase diversity of activities

  • Creating charts, behavior contracts, and visual aids to promote good behaviors
